Nitish’s move to introduce reservation in outsourced services stirs up hornet’s nest in Bihar

Patna, Nov 2 (TheBiharPost/IBNS):The move by the Nitish Kumar government to introduce reservation in contractual appointments has stirred up a hornet’s nest in Bihar with conflicting views coming from NDA partners.

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Dr CP Thakur questioned the very move of his own government saying that may lead to public resentment and drop in investments in due course.

According to him, the move could convey a wrong message outside the state and ultimately prompt the investors to hold their hands back in investing money in the state.

Thakur is of the opinion that instead of extending reservation to this sector, the government should have paid more attention to providing proper education to the socially backward classes.

“But, introducing reservations in a new sector may make a section of the society feel that the space available to it is shrinking. This may lead to public resentment that may become difficult to handle”, Thakur told the media on Thursday.

However, the Hindustani Awam Morcha, an ally of the NDA, welcomed this move. The party termed Thakur’s observations as “personal” and not the “official stand of the BJP”.

The Nitish Kumar government in a politically significant move on Wednesday approved reservation in contractual appointments to be made by the government through outsourcing.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Bihar cabinet held on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by chief minister Nitish Kumar.

“The state cabinet today approved reservation in contract appointments to be made through outsourcing,” Bihar cabinet secretary Brajesh Mehrotra told media after the meeting.

Reservation will be applied in appointments of doctors, engineers, teachers and other posts on contractual basis, authorities said.

As per reports, at presently, around 10,000 outsourced staff members—mostly from technical and engineering fields— are working in various state government departments.

The development comes soon after two senior JD-U leaders, former Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary and former minister Shyam Rakak questioned Nitish Kumar government’s silence over centre’s alleged move to end reservation in government jobs.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad also hit out at the chief minister, describing him as “anti-reservation” person.
