Guwahati, Nov 6 (IBNS) : After Himanta Biswa Sarma, one time powerful minister of Tarun Gogoi led Assam government, nine others rebel Congress MLAs have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday.

The nine known as Himanta loyalists joined the saffron party during a function held at the party state unit office in Guwahati in presence of party national secretary Ram Madhab, Mahendra Singh, Ajoy Jamuar, state unit president Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Himanta Biswa Sarma and other party leaders.

The MLAs are Jayanta Mallah Barua, Bolin Chetia, Pradan Barua, Pallab Lochan Das, Rajen Borthakur, Pijush Hazarika, Kripanath Mallah, Abu Taher Bepari and Binanda Saikia.

The nine legislators had met BJP national president Amit Shah at his residence in New Delhi on Sept 5.

On Aug 30, the Assam Pradesh Congress president Anjan Dutta had suspended Jayanta Mallah Barua, Pijush Hazarika, Pallab Lochan Das and Pradan Barua from party membership and issued show cause notice to Bolin Chetia, Rajen Borthakur, Binanda Kumar Saikia, Kripanath Mallah and Abu Taher Bepari for anti party activities.

Meanwhile, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the BJP will form the next government in Assam with absolute mandates.

“Congress will not retain in power in the state in next 50 years,” Himanta said.
