At least six pilgrims died after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Tarapith town, a holy pilgrimage site in West Bengal, on Monday, media reports said.

The fire was first reported around 4 am when pilgrims were sleeping in the facility.

According to reports, the fire first broke out in the reception area and then spread to other corners of the four-storey hotel.

Firefighters reached the spot and brought the flames under control.

The hotel is located close to Tarapith Police Station and the temple, which draws a large number of pilgrims every year.

The injured people were rushed to the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

The exact cause of the fire is still not known.

An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
