National Commission for Minorities raises concerns over killings of Sikhs in Pakistan
New Delhi: Chairman of National Commission for Minorities , Iqbal Singh Lalpura, raised concerns over the killings of Sikhs in Pakistan and urged the Ministry of External Affairs to take up the matter with the Pakistan government.
“Really sad to hear about the Sikhs Ranjit Singh(42) and Kuljeet singh (38) killed in Peshawar, Pakistan , Sikh living in India are concerned about the well-being of a small number of maybe 6000 living in Pakistan,” Lalpur said in a statement.
Lalpura's statement came in the backdrop of killings of two members of Pakistan's minority Sikh community by unidentified assailants at the outskirts of Peshawar, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday.
He said the sentiment of Sikhs and concern for their safety is being taken up with the Ministry of external Affairs, and requested them to ask Pakistan to ensure safety of Sikhs living there”.
“Killing of Sikhs and abduction of Sikh girls for conversion in Pakistan is unacceptable” he added.
About 15,000 Sikhs live in Peshawar, mostly in the Jogan Shah neighbourhood of the provincial capital.
Most of the members of the Sikh community in Peshawar are involved in business, while some also run pharmacies.
