New Delhi, Mar 15 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condemned the attacks on two churches in New Zealand's Christchurch city which left at least 49 people killed.

" Prime Minister has expressed his deep shock and sadness at the loss of scores of innocent lives in the heinous terrorist attack at the places of worship in Christchurch today," read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.

In a letter addressed to Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, he expressed his deepest condolences to the families bereaved in this dastardly attack, offered heartfelt prayers for the speedy recovery of the injuried and underscored India’s solidarity with the friendly people of New Zealand at this difficult time.

The Prime Minister stressed India’s strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and of all those who support such acts of violence.

He stressed that hatred and violence have no place in diverse and democratic societies.

At least 49 people have died in New Zealand's worst terror attack in which gunmen stormed two city mosques on Friday and opened fire, New Zealand's top cop Mark Bush said.

Briefing the media in Wellington, police chief Bush said: "At the Deans Avenue mosque, we now know that 41 people have lost their lives. And at Linwood Avenue, seven have lost their lives."

More than 40 have been injured and one of them has succumbed to injuries. Consequently, the death toll in this attack stands at 49.
