Najma Heptulla, GM Siddeshwara resign as Union Ministers

New Delhi, July 12 (IBNS): A week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet rejig, Union Ministers Najma Heptulla and GM Siddeshwara resigned on Tuesday, officials said.

Both were above 75 years of age, which is the upper limit for holding a cabinet post, according to the unwritten rules of the party.

According to reports, Heptulla was out of the country so she couldn't submit her resignation on July 5.

Heptulla, who headed the Minority Affairs portfolio, submitted her resignation to PM Modi on Tuesday.

The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation.

"Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Minister of State, shall be assigned the Independent charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs," read  a press communique issued by the President's Secretariat.

Siddeshwara was the Minister of State for Heavy Industries.

He will be succeeded by Babul Supriyo, who was the junior minister for Urban Development.

In a major Cabinet reshuffle at the Centre, the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday removed Smriti Irani as the Human Resource Development Minister and instead appointed Prakash Javadekar to hold the portfolio.

Prakash Javadekar was elevated to cabinet rank on Tuesday morning.

Irani has been assigned the portfolio of the Textile Ministry, which is considered as a less important one.
