MP: Shivraj Chouhan vows exemplary punishment in brutal assault of tribal man

Bhopal/IBNS: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has assured exemplary punishment for those involved in beating a tribal man and then dragging him by a vehicle, causing his death.

“We'll conduct such probes that people will think several times before repeating these acts,” Chouhan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Chief minister's statement comes in the wake of a massive uproar following the torture and then the death of a tribal man -  Kanhaiyalal Bheel.

A group of people led by a man, identified as Chhitar Mal Gurjar, tied Bheel to a vehicle and dragged him, a viral video of the incident shows. The man can be seen begging for mercy as his perpetrators continue to assault him.

Gurjar's motorcycle had been knocked down by Bheel and the milk loaded in cans on the former's vehicle spilled on the road, according to reports.

Eight men have been charged with murder under provisions of IPC and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Five of them have been arrested while three accused were absconding, according to media reports.

Police said illegal homes of Chhitar Mal Gurjar, Mahendra Gurjar and two others have been demolished, and dossiers of all the accused were being prepared to ensure they got the strictest punishment.

The case would be tried in a fast-track court to ensure speedy justice, police added.
