More than 250 terrorists killed in airstrike: Amit Shah

New Delhi, Mar 4 (IBNS): Though the government is yet to confirm the number of terrorists killed in the airstrike which was carried out by India post-Pulwama attack, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah has stated the figure is above 250.

In an election rally on Sunday, Shah said as quoted by NDTV, "After Uri, our forces went into Pakistan and carried out surgical strikes. They avenged the death of our soldiers. After Pulwama, everyone thought there could be no surgical strikes, what will happen? But under Modi's leadership, the government carried out an air strike after the 13th day and killed more than 250 terrorists."

Shah is the first ruling BJP member who came out with a figure though the Armed Forces had said it was not possible to tell the actual number.

The airstrike, which was carried out across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) 12 days after the Pulwama terror attack, that had left at least 40 paramilitary personnel martyred.

The attack was carried out by Pakistan-based militant organisation, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

On Feb 27, Pakistan had shot down and captured Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman in a dogfight. The pilot was released on Friday.

Shah's comment came days after several opposition leaders questioned the number of terrorists killed in the airstrike.

Alleging that BJP is using the airstrike issue to garner votes in the upcoming General Elections, several opposition leaders urged the government to provide details of the action taken by the IAF after the Pulwama attack.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, Mamata Banerjee, who is known to be a strong critic of the Modi government, questioned the number of militants killed in the airstrike.

The controversy got fuel with former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa's statement where he said his party will benefit in the forthcoming polls due to the airstrike.

The Lok Sabha polls are expected to be held by May.
