Modi needs no citizenship certificate because he is Indian by birth: PMO's RTI reply draws flak

| @indiablooms | Mar 02, 2020, at 02:18 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: In reply to a Right To Information (RTI) filed by one Subhankar Sarkar asking the citizenship certificate of Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has said there was no need of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader's such document since he is an Indian by birth.

In a reply to the RTI, which was filed on Jan 17, 2020 amid the nationwide protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the PMO said, "Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is a citizen of India by birth in terms of Section 3 of the The Citizenship Act, 1955 and as such the question of having a citizenship certificate which is for citizenship by registration does not arise."

Following the reply, several people raised question why they would require to show documents to prove citizenship if not the Prime Minister.

Gaurav Pandhi, who refers to himself as a political activist on Twitter, tweeted, ""Kagaz Nahin Dikhayenge" says PMO as a response to the RTI seeking info about PM Modi's date of birth certificate. Apparently, PM Modi too doesn't have a DOB and is at risk of losing his citizenship after implementation of NRC. damn!"

One Twitter user in the name of Darryl said, "1)RTI QUIRKY SHOWED PM MODI HAS NO OFFICIAL BIRTH OR CITIZENSHIP RECORD JUST A STATEMENT THAT HE WAS BORN IN INDIA WILL @BJP4India GOVT ACCEPT SIMILAR STANDING BY OTHER CITIZENS? WHO WILL ANSWER THAT QUESTION?"

Another user tweeted, "Very important. This latest RTI response of Feb 2020 says PM Modi is citizen of India by birth and the question of his having a citizenship certificate which is for citizenship by registration does not arise. So, why CAA/NPR/NRC for other citizens of the country?"

Modi, 69, was born in Gujarat's Vadnagar on Sept 17, 1950.
