Modi govt's 'One Nation, One Election' bills sent to JPC
New Delhi/IBNS: The central government's bills proposing simultaneous elections in 28 states and eight union territories were on Friday sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), media reports said
The two bills were sent to the 39-member JPC minutes before the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die.
The resolution recommending the bills to be sent to the JPC was moved by law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
It was passed by voice vote amid the Opposition's loud protests against union home minister Amit Shah over his controversial remark on Father of the Constitution, BR Ambedkar.
The ONOE bills including one requiring a constitutional amendment aims to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the country.
The bills, which were passed by the union cabinet last week, were introduced in the Lok Sabha last Tuesday amid stiff objection from the opposition bench.
The introduction of the bills was opposed by 196 members while 269 MPs favoured it.
The initiative has faced opposition from several INDIA bloc parties, including the Congress and AAP, which argue it could disproportionately benefit the ruling party.
Meanwhile, prominent NDA allies, such as JD(U) and Chirag Paswan's party, have expressed their support for the proposal.
The decision to introduce the bills follows the government's acceptance of recommendations from a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
The panel proposed a phased implementation of simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies.
According to the committee’s 18,626-page report, the plan involves two stages: aligning Lok Sabha and state assembly polls initially, followed by local body elections within 100 days of the national and state polls.
