Goa, June 14 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who embarked on India's largest warship INS Vikramaditya on Saturday, dedicated the aircraft carrier to the nation.
"The PM dedicates INS Vikramaditya to the nation," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.

"This is an important day for our nation," the PM was quoted as saying by the PMO while dedicating the warship to the nation.

He said 'One rank one pension' will be implemented while addressing officers on board INS Vikramaditya.

Modi also said India should be self sufficient in manufacturing defence equipment.

The PM said, "Why should we import defence equipment? We must be self sufficient. Why can't we send our defence equipment to other nations."

This is Modi's first visit to a military instillation after he was sworn in as the country's Prime Minister last month.

On his arrival, Modi was received at INS Hansa (Naval Air Station at Goa) by the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan and a 150-man ceremonial ‘Guard of Honour’ was presented to him.

INS Vikramaditya is the latest aircraft carrier inducted into the Indian Navy.

Modi's ‘Day at Sea’ with the Western Fleet progressed with watching various manoeuvres and formations of ships and submarines.

He also boarded the MiG 29K briefly.

Modi was also shown the cockpit of a fighter jet onboard the ship.

The Prime Minister embarked on the ‘carrier at sea’ by helicopter and is witnessing a host of exercises by the frontline warships and aircraft of the Indian Navy.

Modi was also shown how INS Tarkash conducts its Anti Submarine firing.
