Modi arrives in Herat to inaugurate India-Afghan Friendship dam

Herat, Afghanistan, June 4 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Herat on Saturday to inaugurate the India-Afghan Friendship dam on the first leg of his five-nation tour.

This is second visit to Afghanistan in less than six months.

The Afghan-India Friendship Dam, earlier known as Salma dam, in western Herat district is built at a cost of over Rs 1,700 crore under India's development partnership with Afghanistan.

"It is symbol of our friendship and would usher in hope, light up homes, nourish the fertile fields of Herat and bring prosperity to the people of the region," the Prime Minister said yesterday.

The Prime Minister will also hold talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on the current situation in the country and the peace process besides other bilateral and regional issues.

According to the official itinerary announced by the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi  will l reach Herat around noon. The Inauguration of India-Afghanistan Friendship Dam will be followed by lunch hosted by President Ashraf Ghani. 

Modi will then pay a brief  visit to Indian Consulate at Herat, where he will interact  with Consulate staff and ITBP personnel.

He will leave for Doha in the evening  at 5 pm (7.30 IST),where he will visit a workers Camp. He will attend a dinner hosted by the  Qatar Prime Minister around 7:20 pm (9.20pm IST) .

 Modi will also visit Qatar, Switzerland, the U.S. and Mexico, during which the focus will be on broadening bilateral trade, energy and security cooperation and push for India’s bid to become a member of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
