Meghalaya police recover huge cache of arms-ammunition, explosives in East Garo Hills district
Shillong, Oct 25 (IBNS): Meghalaya police recovered a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives in the north eastern state on Wednesday.
According to reports, the arms and ammunition were recovered from Rongbokgre and Nengmandalgre area in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district.
The seized weapons belonged to banned outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in East Garo Hills district. The weapons were buried in the forest area by the group.
East Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) R Momin said that based on intelligence input, a team of East Garo Hills district police had launched operation at Rongbokgre and Nengmandalgre area and recovered the arms and ammunition with the help of local villagers.
Security personnel had recovered one AK series rifle with broken trigger assembly, two SBBL rifles, one SBML rifle, seven pistols, two AK magazines, one .303 LMG magazines, five SLR magazines, two INSAS magazines, seven pistols magazines, three mortar shells, one 36 HE Hand Grenade, two UBGL grenades, 2823 rounds ammunitions of various calibres, two Remote controls for IED, one IED without detonator, 11 time bomb circuits, 12 RC bomb circuit, ten time bomb batteries, three WT sets, 34 WT set battery chargers, 20 WT set adapters, six WT set battery covers, 46 WT set headphones, four tactical pistol holsters, velcro tape rolls and GNLA demand pads receipts from the area.
R Momin said: “The recovered arms and ammunition belonged to banned outfit GNLA. It was entirely with the support of the villagers that such a huge recovery was made possible. More and more villagers are coming forward to help the police in recovering the hidden weapons which would pose a serious threat to the safety and security of the people if they fell into the wrong hands."
The East Garo Hills district SP further said that efforts are still on to recover the hidden weapons.
After the killing of Sohan D Shira, C-in-C of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Meghalaya police are now trying to crack down the insurgent group and recovering arms, ammunition and explosives of the outfit.
