Meghalaya molestation: Encounter ends

South Garo Hills, June 5 (IBNS): The encounter between the militants, who killed a woman for resisting their attempt to molest her, and SWAT-Cobra team ended on Thursday evening after the security forces smashed the camp of the Garo National Liberation Army (GLNA), media reports said.

The security forces have reportedly recovered an air-gun and three bullet-proof jackets from the camp.

The encounter lasted for nearly 10 hours.

This comes a day after a woman was shot dead by alleged militants for resisting their attempt to molest her outside her home in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district on Tuesday.

Earlier on Thursday, Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) PJP Hanaman said, "The terrorists have been identified. An encounter started today morning. It is going on in the Durama range near Adugre village."

"We assume there are at least 40 to 50 terrorists at the camp," he said.

The Meghalaya Police on Tuesday said the woman's five children and their father were locked up in the house by the assailants.

They also saw how they assaulted their mother and later shot her in the head.

The alleged militants fired six times at the woman's head.

The attackers allegedly belong to the terrorist outfit Garo National Liberation Army.

The terror group is already involved in several cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion.

This comes even after the country is outraged over the recent spate of crimes against women.

Two Dalit minor sisters were allegedly gangraped and then hanged from a tree at Katra village in Badaun district on May 27.

The cousin sisters, aged 14 and 15 respectively, were reportedly missing since May 27 night.
