Media baron Ramoji Rao passes away at 87, condolences pour in

Hyderabad/IBNS: Media baron Ramoji Rao, the head of Ramoji Group, passed away at 87 in the wee hours on Saturday.

On June 5, Rao was rushed to a hospital in Hyderabad after he underwent high blood pressure and breathlessness.

Mourning his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, "The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world.

"Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development. I am fortunate to have got several opportunities to interact with him and benefit from his wisdom. Condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers during this difficult time. Om Shanti."

Rao's Ramoji Group owns Ramoji Film City, which is the largest film production facility.

He was also the head of Eenadu newspaper, ETV Network of television channels, film production company Usha Kiran Movies.

Rao had won 4 Filmfare Awards South, 5 Nandi Awards and the National Film Award in Telugu cinema.

For his contribution in journalism, literature and education, Rao was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India, in 2016.

Mourning his demise, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy posted on X, "Today, the death of leader, eminent industrialist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Cherukuri Ramoji Rao has caused a great shock.

"He is credited with adding credibility to Telugu journalism and adding value to the Telugu industrial sector. Without Ramojirao, the Telugu press and media sector will never be able to fill the gap. Praying to God to rest his soul in peace... My deepest condolences to the family members."

Andhra Pradesh CM-designate N Chandrababu Naidu posted on X, "The death of the chairman of the group of companies today, Mr. Ramoji Rao, has caused a great shock. The death of Mr. Ramoji Rao, who was born in an ordinary family and achieved extraordinary achievements, caused great grief... I am associated with Sriramoji Rao for 4 decades... I pray that Ramoji Rao's soul rest in peace."
