Matthew Miller says US celebrated election that happened in India in response to Pakistani journalist's 'Hindu state' question

U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller recently praised India's general election when a Pakistani journalist asked him whether he felt that the neighbouring nation was “turning into a Hindu state”.

Miller said: "Electoral matters are matters for the Indian people to decide. We celebrate the election that happened in India; it was the largest exercise of electoral franchise in any country anytime in history."

He said: "But for specific results of that election, it’s just not something we comment on."

India voted in a seven-phased general poll this year.

PM Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power for the third consecutive term after winning the polls.

Despite a higher number of seats predicted in exit polls, the BJP managed to win only 240 constituencies in the elections.

The BJP-led NDA alliance managed to come to power with 293 seats won the polls.

PM Narendra Modi and his ministers took oath on Sunday.

The opposition INDIA alliance gave them a strong fight by winning 234.
