Kolkata, May 17 (IBNS): West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday congratulated people of West Bengal for her party Trinamool Congress' victory in four out of seven civic bodies that went on to poll last Sunday.

In a tweet, Banerjee said: "Congratulations to Ma Mati Manush for again & again putting their trust in us, We are honored, privileged & humbled."

Domkal, Raigunj and Pujali were among the civic bodies in the plains which went for voting on Sunday.

In Domkal, the TMC won 20 of the 21 seats, while in Raigunj, a Congress stronghold once, TMC won 24, Congress-Left combine won 2 and  BJP got one.

In Pujali TMC won 12 seats and BJP got 2 while the Left Congress alliance got one.

In six booths of Domkal and Pujali, re-pollings were held on Tuesday, according to the order of the state Election Commission, following the complaints by the Opposition.

The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal also made inroads in the hills by winning Mirik where they won 6 seats against 3 by BJP-GJM.

The TMC emerged in hills as a challenger to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), an ally of the BJP, even as the latter won Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong corporations convincingly.

GJM-BJP won 17 of the 20 wards in Kurseong.

In Darjeeling, TMC won one only against 31 by BJP-GJM.

In Kalimpong, TMC won 2 while the BJP-GJM won 18 of the total 23. Jana Andolan Party (JAP) from the hills won 2 and one by others.

Regarding the success of her party in the hills, the TMC supremo in a follow up tweet said: "Congratulations to my brother/sisters in hill areas of Darjeeling Kurseong Kalimpong Mirik for participating in the democratic process."

"Special thanks to Mirik for reposing faith in us. We will work sincerely for you. After so many decades we begin a new era in the hills" she added.

After almost three decades, any political party of the plains could win an election in the hills of North Bengal.

However, the opposition parties did not give much importance to the win of TMC, as they accused the ruling party for booth capturing during polling on Sunday.
