Mamata Banerjee's offer to quit as CM is a drama: Mukul Roy

Kolkata, May 27 (IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mukul Roy has slammed West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and said her decision to offer her resignation as the Chief Minister was nothing but a 'drama'.

“It was a drama. Trinamool Congress (TMC) is all about Banerjee. Others don’t matter. It was like Banerjee talking of quitting and she herself not accepting it and then finally announcing it before the media," Mukul Roy was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

"She will not quit till voters show her the door. She can’t live without power," he said.

He said the TMC has served its purpose of opposing the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

“TMC was formed only to oppose the Communist Party of India (Marxist). It has served its purpose. Regional parties are losing relevance, if you go by Lok Sabha results across India,” he was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Mukul Roy was once a Trinamool Congress leader. He left the TMC to join the BJP later.

He is considered as one of the key persons to play a major role behind BJP's strong performance in the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal this time.

The BJP won 18 seats in the state. Its best result in West Bengal in the Lok Sabha polls.

The Trinamool Congress clinched 22 seats, down by 12 seats from its 2014 tally of 34.

At the end of the Trinamool Congress meeting following the Lok Sabha polls results which saw the party's seat getting reduced significantly from its 2014 tally of 34, Mamata Banerjee said she did not want to continue as the Chief Minister of West Bengal but her party insisted her to continue.

"I told at the beginning of the meeting that I don't want to continue as the Chief Minister," she said while addressing a press conference.

"The central forces worked against us and an emergency-like situation was created," she said.

Meanwhile, the four-party Left Front, that ruled the state for 34 years till 2011,  managed to get only 7.8 percent votes in the polls. The party did not win a single seat in the elections.

The Congress clinched 2.
