Kolkata, July 1 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to her predecessor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy on his birth and death anniversaries on Monday.

"Tribute to Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, former chief minister of Bangla, on his birth and death anniversaries" Mamata tweeted.

Roy, who was the second Chief Minister of the state, was also a physician, educationist and freedom fighter. He became the Chief Minister in 1948 and remained in his office until his death in 1962.

Considered as the modern maker of West Bengal, Roy played a huge role in creating new cities Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar and Habra.

In Roy's memory, the July 1 is celebrated as the National Doctors's Day every year. The former Chief Minister was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country, in 1961.

Mamata has announced a half-day duty for all state government employees on Monday for Roy's birth and death anniversaries.
