Maharashtra: Shiv Sena stakes claim for Leader of Opposition

Mumbai, Nov 10 (IBNS): After being snubbed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena on Monday staked claim for the Leader of Opposition post in the newly elected 288-member Maharashtra Assembly.
Thane MLA Eknath Shinde will be the Leader of opposition, Shiv Sena reportedly announced.

The party, which won 63 seats after ending its 25-year-old alliance with the BJP, was left with no option other than taking the Opposition seats, after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supported the BJP-led government.

The Sena even on Sunday said it will sit in the opposition in case the ruling BJP  in Maharashtra takes the support of the NCP).

Addressing a press conference, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had said: "The Shiv Sena will sit in opposition benches in Maharashtra in case the BJP accepts NCP support."

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis was sworn-in last month as Maharashtra’s new Chief Minister.

Fadnavis will have to prove its majority in the House on November 12.

The BJP contested alone in recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly polls after ending its 25-year alliance with the Shiv Sena last month over a seat-sharing disagreement.
