Maharashtra: Police constable from Kolhapur booked for raping young woman

Kolhapur/UNI: A police constable, attached to district police headquarters, was on Tuesday booked for allegedly raping a young woman for four years and harassing her.

Constable Nilesh Namdev Padval (28), resident of Padvalwadi village in Karveer tehsil of the district, who was working in the district police headquarters in Kasba Bavda area of the city, got acquainted with the young woman through social media and then raped her many times from December 2016 to June 11, 2020, police said.

He not only harassed her physically and mentally but also forced her to undergo abortion when she became pregnant.

When Nilesh refused for marry her, the woman met district superintendent of police Dr Abhinav Deshmukh and narrated the entire incident to him.

Taking a serious note of the incident, SP Deshmukh ordered his deputy Ms Prerna Katte and Juna Rajwada police station inspector Pramod Jadhav to investigate the matter.

The Juna Rajwada police have registered a case under sections 376, 323, 506 of Indian Penal Code as well as under relevant sections of the Prevention of Atrocities Act against constable Padval in regards to the crime.

Meanwhile, after getting information about the complaint against him, the constable has absconded, sources added.
