Maharashtra cuts expenditures, says no to new hiring in fight against Covid-19

Mumbai/IBNS: Maharashtra, the worst-hit state by the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, on Tuesday took a slew of measures including cutting down of expenditures in various departments to combat the contagion, media reports said.

In a major decision, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government- run by a coalition of three parties- said only 33 per cent of the total budgetary allowance can be availed by each department.

Maharashtra's chief secretary Ajoy Mehta said neither the state will allow any new recruitment nor will say yes to any new developmental projects.

The Uddhav Thackeray government has already decided which are the departments that will have the highest priority for future expenses.

The departments like Public Health, Drug Administration, Relief and Rehabilitation, Food and Civil Supplies will get the topmost priority by the government amid the spread of the respiratory disease which has no cure or vaccine as of yet.

Mehta also informed all ongoing schemes will be reviewed and only the ones which are essentials should be finalised.

While over 46,000 people across the country of 1.3 billion people have been infected with the virus, Maharashtra alone has reported 14,541 cases including 2,465 cured and 583 deaths.
