Madras HC adjourns Karti IT case to Feb 27

Chennai/UNI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday adjourned to Feb 27, Income-tax case against Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti and his wife Srinidhi for alleged non-disclosure of income for the 2015-16 fiscal and tax evasion.

As the matter was adjourned, the interim stay granted by the court for framing of charges against the duo, would continue till Thursday, when their pleas would come up for further arguments.

When the petitions filed by them came up for hearing, Justice M Sundar, who had granted an interim stay on Jan 21 and extended it till Tuesday, adjourned it further to Feb 27.

In their pleas, they sought a direction to stall the proceedings against the Special Court trying cases against elected MLAs and MPs, which was earlier scheduled to frame charges against them on Jan 21.

Special Court Judge D Lingeswaran had on Jan 7 dismissed their discharge petitions observing that there were adequate grounds to presume that the accused has committed offences while finding merit in the evidence submitted by the prosecution.

Rejecting the plea of Karti and his wife that hard drives could not be admitted as evidence, the Judge said it was clear that the hard drives in question were seized from Chess Global Advisory Services and they were sealed properly under custody.

The Judge also directed the prosecution to go ahead with the framing of charges on Jan 21 and said if both the accused were not present on that day, warrants would be issued against them, following which Karti and his wife filed an appeal in the High Court against the Special Court order, which granted the interim stay.
