Indian PM Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong after his long-ruling People’s Action Party registered a resounding victory in the general elections.

Congratulating Wong, Modi wrote on X: "Heartiest congratulations @LawrenceWongST on your resounding victory in the general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties. I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."

In the general polls, PAP put up a stunning show by clinching 87 of 97 seats, marking another return to power.

Workers Party, the key opposition, just managed to win 10 seats.

In all, 65.57 per cent of the 2,386,452 valid votes cast went to the PAP – up from 61.24 per cent in the 2020 General Election - in what was Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's first electoral test leading the ruling party, reported Channel News Asia.

"I Am Humbled'

After the poll victory, Wong said people in Singapore have given a clear and strong mandate to PAP to govern the country.

"Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team," he wrote on X.
