Lies are being spread about quota Bill, Citizehsip Bill won't deprive northeast people of their rights : PM Modi

Solapur, Jan 9  (IBNS) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said  that a lot of "misconceptions" were being spread about the quota bill which his Government seeks to get passed to secure ten per cent reservation for the poor section from among general castes and expected it get passage in the Rajay Sabha.

Addressing a rally at Solapur in Maharashtra, Modi said, "there are misconceptions being spread about the quota bill. However, I expect it will be passed in Rajya Sabha too. It was extended by a day for this quota bill only."

The Bill, which was tabled in the Upper House on Wednesday, confronted a stiff opposition from the Congress and other anti-BJP forces, resulting in a ruckus that forced adjournment of the House. The last day of the Winter Session was extended by a day to ensure that three key Bills, including the Citizenship Amendment Bill and the Triple Talaq Bill,  which the Government seeks to push through, are passed after they were okayed in the Lok Sabha.

Modi said passage of the Bill  that provides for 10 per cent quota for the poor sections in general category is a “strong answer” by Parliament to those spreading lies on the move:

Speaking on the Citizenship Bill, the PM assured the people of the northeast that their interests will not be hampered. "Yesterday, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Lok Sabha. I want to assure people from northeast  Assam that their rights will not be compromised with this decision. Nothing will be taken away from any other weaker section,", he said.

Critics of the bill say it will allow citizenship to illegal Hindu migrants from Bangladesh, who entered India after March 1971. Illegal migration is a sensitive issue in the northeast, where tribals and other ethnic communities wish to keep out the outsiders. Raising strong objection over the Bill, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which was in alliance with the BJP in Assam, has already snapped ties with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
