Lanka to free Indian fishermen to mark Modi's swearing-in
New Delhi, May 25 (IBNS): A day ahead of Prime Minister elect Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the release of arrested Indian fishermen to show a goodwill measure to mark the occasion.
"As a goodwill measure on the occasion of @narendramodi's swearing-in, President instructs officials to release Indian fishermen in custody," Rajapaksa said.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin posted on Twitter: "Look forward to return of 5 fishermen to home in #India from #SriLanka after announcement by @PresRajapaksa today."
This comes after India abstained from voting on an anti-Sri Lanka motion at the UN Human Rights Council.
Gearing up for Modi's swearing-in ceremony, invitations to several heads of nations have been sent out which include Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Afghan president Hamid Karzai and Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
