Kolkata: Burrabazar multi-storey still burning after 14 hours, 16 fire tenders engaged in firefighting ops
The blaze was first seen at a old multi-storey at Amratala Lane area under Burrabazar Police Station limits in central part of the city at around 9:30 pm. on Monday.
As many as 35 fire tender engines rushed to the spot and firemen worked overnight to bring the massive fire under control.
"Currently 16 fire tender engines are working at the scene and the fire would be doused completely by next few hours," a senior fire official told IBNS.
West Bengal Fire Service Minister and Kolkata Mayor Shovan Chatterjee and local MLA Smita Bakshi went to the spot on Monday late night and later on Tuesday morning, city police commissioner Rajeev Kumar visited the scene.
During the firefighting operations, at least 13 firefighters were slightly injured, according to reports.
However, no casualty has been reported so far, while the multi-storey has been gutted completely due to the fire and its few portion reportedly collapsed.
Meanwhile, the incident has hit traffic movement at all nearby roads since Monday night.
"Due to the massive fire incident, traffic restrictions have been imposed on Armenian Street, Mullick Street, Zakaria Street, T.C. Dutta Street, Colootola Street and Rabindra Sarani," a senior official of Kolkata Traffic Police said.
"We will withdraw all restrictions for traffic movement whenever the fire will be brought under control completely," the official added.
