Kerala : IUML retains Mallapuram Parliamentary seat, candidate wins by 1.71 lakh votes

Malappuram, Apr 17 (IBNS) : Opposition UDF and IUML candidate P.K. Kunhalikutty won the Malappuram Lok Sabha by election by a margin of 1.71 lakh votes on Monday, reports said.

The Indian Union of Muslim League  strongman remained far ahead of his nearest rival — Communist Party of India-Marxist candidate and youth leader MB Faisal throughout the counting process. He retained the seat for the party.

IUML is a key partner of the opposition coalition United Democratic Front, led by the Congress.

The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate N. Sreeprakash came a distant third.

The Left democratic Front (LDF) has, however, improved its vote share by almost one lakh more compared to 2014 elections.

The bypoll, held on April 12, was necessitated following the death of  E Ahamed, former Union Minister and leader of IUML, a key partner in the Congress-led UDF Opposition in Kerala.
