Thiruvananthapuram, May 30 (IBNS): With an aim to relieve people of the southern state, the Kerala government on Wednesday decided to reduce the fuel price by one rupee from Friday, media reports said.

Sending out a message to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made the announcement on Wednesday.

Vijayan has been quoted by NDTV as saying, "This will amount to loss of Rs. 509 crore for the state government. This is our message to the central government. At a time when the nation has been demanding a reduction in prices, the central government hasn't done anything."

Kerala was reportedly the third highest state to levy taxes on fuel.

The fuel prices in the country has already crossed Rs. 80 per litre, creating discomfort for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules the central government.

The government is likely to call a meeting to find a solution to the price hike.

BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP, Amit Shah, a week ago, assured that the government will come up with a solution within two to three days.

Meanwhile, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) on Wednesday reduced the fuel prices by one paise.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the reduction of the fuel price by one paise. He has termed the move as a "childish" prank by the PM.

Rahul tweeted, "Dear PM, You've cut the price of Petrol and Diesel today by 1 paisa. ONE paisa!?? If this is your idea of a prank, it’s childish and in poor taste. P.S. A ONE paisa cut is not a suitable response to the #FuelChallenge I threw you last week."
