Kerala CM slams A-G Mukul Rohatgi for appearing in SC on behalf of bar owners
Thiruvananthapuram, July 11 (IBNS): Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday lashed out at Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi for appearing in the Supreme Court on behalf of Kerala's bar owners.
Rohatgi appealed against the Kerala High Court order which upheld the state government's decision to restrict liquor licenses to 5-star bar owners.
"I will write to Prime Minister about Mukul Rohtagi representing Kerala bar owners in SC. A-G representing bar owners in Supreme Court is unconstitutional how can Law Ministry give him nod for this," Chandy was quoted as saying by media.
"This is unfortunate. The decision taken by Kerala government is non political. We expect full support from central government but this is not happening. We want to eradicate liquor evil from state. We want better sovereign system in our country into matter like this," he added.
Kerala High Court Division Bench had upheld the state liquor policy and stated that bars in five-star hotels in the state will be allowed to serve liquor.
This order implied that bars in four-star hotels and heritage resorts will have to closed.
The court had upheld this policy owing to the health of the people.
CM Oommen Chandy had, in August last year, announced that all bars barring 20 five-star ones will have to shut down.
As per state directives, only five-star and heritage hotels were allowed to sell liquor, which also have to remain closed on Sundays.
Challenging the directive, bar-owners then approached the Kerala High Court seeking cancellation of state order.
