Kerala: Christian priest charged on charges of sexually abusing minors

Thiruvananthapuram, July 8 (IBNS): Police have arrested a Christian priest after residents of an orphanage, which is run by him, filed a complaint of sexual assault against him in Kochi, media reports said.

The issue came to light after seven children fled from the orphanage on Saturday night and alerted their relatives about their ordeal, Hindustan Times reported.

He was arrested under Sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and Protection of Children from the Sexual Offences Act.

Police reportedly said that the priest was running the orphanage without proper licence.

It was providing shelter and education for children from poor families.

It was being run in the area for the past two years.

He enrolled children after giving wide publicity through churches, the police told Hindustan Times.

“Many of these children hail from financially unstable and broken families. With no means to look after their children, parents entrust them to such homes and rapacious employees exploit them,” an official of Childline told the newspaper.
