Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani dies at 92

Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani died at his residence in Srinagar on Wednesday. He was 92.

The hardliner Islamist leader resigned from politics and the Hurriyat in 2020.

Geelani was one of the prominent faces of separatist movement in Kashmir since 1989. In his resignation letter last year post abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir, he had accused some Hurriyat Conference leaders of "revolting against his leadership" debunking the speculation that he was quitting because of poor health condition or government pressure.

Condoling the death, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and People's Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti has tweeted: "Saddened by the news of Geelani sahab's passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta'aala grant him jannat & condolences to his family & well wishers."
