Karnataka bypoll results: Congress-JD(S) stuns BJP in Bellary, leads in four seats

Bengaluru, Nov 6 (IBNS): In a big jolt to the saffron outfit ahead of 2019 General Elections, the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) alliance is on the verge of snatching the Bellary Lok Sabha seat, where by-elections were held on last Saturday, from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), media reports said.

The bypolls were held in Ballary, Mandya, Shimoga Lok Sabha seats and Ramanagara, Jamkhandi assembly constituencies. The results are coming out on Tuesday.

According to the latest report, the Congress is ahead in Bellary and Jamkhandi by one lakh and 11,000 votes respectively.

The JD(S) is leading in Ramanagara and Mandya by 36,000 and one lakh votes respectively.

In Ramanagara, BJP candidate L Chandrasekhar gave a walkover even before the polls by joining the Congress.

Shimoga has come as the only hope for the BJP this time as the saffron party is leading the seat by 35,000 votes.

The bypoll has become necessary in the Ramanagara seat after Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, who had contested also from Channapatna, resigned.

The Shivmogga Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned to contest the assembly election in 2018.

The Ballari seat, which is a BJP bastion, fell vacant after BJP leader B Sreeramulu, who had won from the Molakalmuru assembly seat earlier in 2018, resigned.

In a similar way, the Mandya seat is vacant as JD(S) leader CS Puttaraju, who is presently a Karnataka assembly member, resigned.

In Jamkhandi, the Congress' candidate is Anand Nyamagouda, son of senior leader Siddu Nyamagouda, whose death has left the seat vacant.

The southern state is presently ruled by the combination of Congress and JD(S).
