Karnataka bypoll results: Cong-JD(S) surges ahead of BJP

| @indiablooms | Nov 06, 2018, at 10:47 am

Bengaluru, Nov 6 (IBNS): Upsetting the saffron brigade, the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) are surging ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka's five seats where by-elections were held on Saturday, media reports said.

The results are coming out on Tuesday.

The bypolls were held in Ballari, Mandya, Shivamogga Lok Sabha seats and Ramanagara, Jamkhandi assembly constituencies.

In Bellari and Mandya, the Congress is leading while the BJP is gaining ground in Shivamogga.

The JD(S) is leading in Ramanagara where BJP candidate L Chandrasekhar gave a walkover even before the polls by joining the Congress.

The Congress-JD(S) alliance, which is presently running the state government, is also leading in Jamkhandi.

The bypoll has become necessary in the Ramanagara seat after Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, who had contested also from Channapatna, resigned.

The Shivmogga Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned to contest the assembly election in 2018.

The Ballari seat, which is a BJP bastion, fell vacant after BJP leader B Sreeramulu, who had won from the Molakalmuru assembly seat earlier in 2018, resigned.

In a similar way, the Mandya seat is vacant as JD(S) leader CS Puttaraju, who is presently a Karnataka assembly member, resigned.

In Jamkhandi, the Congress' candidate is Anand Nyamagouda, son of senior leader Siddu Nyamagouda, whose death has left the seat vacant.
