Karnataka building collapse: Two dead, 30 feared trapped under debris

Dharwad, Mar 19 (IBNS): Two people have died and nearly 30 are feared trapped under the debris of an under-construction building that collapsed in this Karnataka district on Tuesday afternoon, media reports said.

Fifteen people have been injured, of whom three are critical.

The incident took place at Kumareshwara Nagar of Dharward district, around 400km north of state capital Bengaluru.

Reports said hospitals in the area have been placed on alert and 28 people have been rescued from under the debris. As many as 150 people were in the building that had 60 running shops when the building collapsed.

Karnataka chief minster H.D. Kumaraswamy expressed shock.

"Shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to supervise rescue operations. I have also directed the CS to send additional resources and expert rescuers by a special flight to #Dharwad," he tweeted.

"I have instructed the concerned officials to be on location," he added.

Search and rescue operation is on.
