Karnataka bandh over Mahadayi river water dispute : Life partially affected
Bengaluru, Jan 25 (IBNS) : Life was partially disrupted in parts of Karnataka on Thursday as a statewide 12-hour shutdown over the Mahadayi river issue was being observed by pro-Kannada organisations, media reports said.
The outfits, which are protesting against the non-implementation of the Kalasa-Banduri dam project, want Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the water-sharing dispute between Karnataka and Goa.
According to reports, buses remained off the road and shops remained closed in Bengaluru, Mysuru and few other places while districts like Mangaluru, Bagalkot and few others were not affected much by the bandh call.
Thin attendance was reported in Government offices and banks due to lack of transport.
All educational institutes in the Bengaluru city were shut. The Bangalore University has postponed Thursday’s undergraduate and post-graduate exams to February 6, while the Visvesvaraya Technological University has rescheduled the post graduate exam for MBA to February 5.
Schools and colleges in the districts of Haveri, Yadgir, Kalaburagi and Chikkaballapura, however, remained open.
Some activists from the Kannada Rakshana Vedike tried to stop trains from operating at the City Railway station in the morning, but they were quickly dispersed by the police.
Police arrested or detained hundreds of protesters who were trying to forcefully close banks and government offices, the reports said.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah’s Parivartan Rally scheduled for 2.30 in Mysuru was postponed to 4 pm as a result of the protests
