Karanataka woman sells kidney to get bribe money

Bengaluru, Jan 17(IBNS) In a shocking incident, a woman in Karnataka has allegedly sold her kidney for Rs. 8000 to bribe a revenue official to get her work done.

Chikkathayamma, the 55-year-old illiterate woman from Srirangapatna Taluk of Mandya district says she  to bribe a Revenue official to set right land records.

"I kept going to the Taluk office for 14 to 15 years but it was of no use. I was forced to sell my kidney when I got tired of it. What else could I have done? I am a poor farmer," she told CNN-IBN.

As Chikkathayamma said, her father had left behind t behind nearly 15 acres of land near Mysore. But it soon got encroached. To get it back, she approached the district office where an official demanded the bribe.

"A person called Doddaiah said that he will not set the land records right until I pay him 8000 rupees per acre of land. I asked him why I should pay money for my own father's land," she told the news channel.

Unable to pay such a huge amount, a desperate Chikkathayamma sold her kidney in Bengaluru to get the money.

With the Karnataka Lokyaukta now ordering a probe, the Revenue Inspector who allegedly asked for a bribe, has been suspended.

Justice Dr Y Bhaskar Rao, Karnataka Lokayukta has assured a strict action.
