JNU sedition case: Delhi court clears charge sheet

| @indiablooms | Mar 30, 2019, at 07:41 pm

New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat on Saturday observed that sanction in the 2016 Jawaharlal Nehru University sedition case was an administrative action and a charge sheet could be be filed in its absence.

Delhi Police earlier requested more time to file the required sanction from the Arvind Kejriwal government in the charge sheet in connection with the sensational sedition case, involving JNU student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and others, for allegedly raising anti-national slogans.

After investigation was completed in the case, Delhi Police, on January 14 this year, had filed a charge sheet against former JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, and other leaders, including Anirban Bhattacharya and Syed Umar Khalid in the case.

A protest was held in JNU on February 9, 2016, during which anti-national slogans were raised.

DCP of Special Cell of Delhi Police submitted that sanction was an administrative action and the investigating agency had already sent a request to the Kejriwal government for it. The charge sheet, the DCP contended, can be filed without that.

The Judge, after hearing the plea on behalf of Delhi Police, observed that its role regarding sanction was complete and it will now ask the Aam Aadmi Party dispensation about it.
