J&K High Court bans sale of beef in state

Srinagar, Sept 10 (IBNS): The JK High Court on Thursday enforced a ban on the sale of beef across the state and directed the police to keep a vigil on the smuggling and slaughtering of bovine animals.

The move by the Court has drawn flak with the netizens seen expressing their dismay over the court order.

The move came after a Public Interest Litigation against cow slaughter filed by Advocate Parimoksh Seth which reads that slaughtering or killing of bovine animals were an “offence punishable under Section 298-A and possession of such slaughtered animal an act punishable under Section 298-B of the RPC”.

After hearing senior advocate Seth’s PIL, AAG Vishal Sharma, who appeared for the state, said that Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir has not filed an appropriate response regarding the smuggling and slaughtering of bovine animals and their sale in Kashmir valley and has been directed to fill an appropriate response for the same.

A Division Bench of JK High Court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal then directed DGP J&K to ensure that appropriate directions were given to all SSPs, SPs and SHOs of all districts and Police Stations in Jammu and Kashmir that there shall be no sale of beef across the state.

It is noteworthy that Cow Slaughter Act already exists in the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir that bans the killing and sale of bovine animals.

Meanwhile, Netizens have thronged to the social media websites particularly Facebook to express their dismay over the move.
