Srinagar/UNI: An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in the south Kashmir district of Pulwama on Friday, police said.

Acting on a specific information about the presence of militants in village Hanjin Rajpora in Pulwama, the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir launched a Cordon and Search operation (CASO) in the wee hours of Friday.

After sealing all exit points, when the security forces were moving towards targeted area, militants fired on the forces, who retaliated leading to an encounter.

The exchange of fire was going on and further details are awaited, police spokesperson said.

Additional security forces were rushed to the nearby area to prevent any law and order situation.

As many as 61 militants, including some top commanders, were killed by security forces in different encounters in the valley during the first six months of 2021.
