Srinagar/UNI: An encounter ensued between militants and security forces at Handwara in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara on Saturday.

This is the second encounter in the valley today.

Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, Army and CRPF at Chanjmullah in Handwara.

However, they said when security forces were sealing a particular area, the militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons, ''The security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter,'' they said.

They said additional security forces have been rushed to further cordon off the area to foil any attempts by the militants to escape.

Earlier in the day, two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.
