Jammu and Kashmir: Bus accident in Kishtwar kills 33

Kishtwar, July 1 (IBNS): At least 33 people were killed and another 22 injured as a bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Monday, media reports said.

The bus was travelling from Keshwan to Kishtwar.

More than 40 people were travelling in the bus when the mishap occurred.

The rescue operations are underway.

The locals rushed to the site of the mishap immediately after the accident.

The injured people were rushed to District Hospital Kishtwar for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "The accident in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar is heart-wrenching. We mourn all those who lost their lives and express condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest."

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "Extremely sad to hear of the loss of lives of young students in the tragic bus accident in Shopian, Jammu & Kashmir. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families; wishing an early recovery to those injured."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a tweet, "Extremely saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to a road accident in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones. I pray of the speedy recovery of those injured."

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said: "Saddened to hear about the tragic accident in Kishtwar. Deepest condolences to families of the bereaved."

Omar Abdullah, the other former Chief Minister of the state, tweeted, "Terrible news coming in about the high death toll in a bus accident in Kishtwar. Condolences to the families of the deceased & prayers for the swift recovery of the injured."
