Jamia Millia violence: Ten people arrested, none are students
New Delhi/IBNS: Ten people have been arrested by Delhi police in connection with the violence which took place on Sunday evening when students of Jamia Millia University were protesting against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, media reports said.
The arrested people are from Jamia and Okhla areas bordering the university. No students have been arrested yet.
The clash between the Jamia students and police broke out on Sunday after the protest had turned violent with several vehicles set on fire and vandalised.
Following the clash, police had entered the university campus without permission and assaulted the students leading to an outrage across the country.
While the Delhi police had earlier said a Crime Branch team will inquire into the violence, Jamia Millia University Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar has called for a high-level probe into the cops' action.
In an interview with NDTV, Akhtar, who is not sure whether the attack on students were planned or not, said, "My priorities are to protect my students and a probe into the violence."
From Nadwa College in Lucknow to Benaras Hindu University in Varanasi to Jadavpur University in Kolkata, students of various universities across the country protested against the Jamia violence on Monday.
