Indian classical dancing legend Yamini Krishnamurti dies after prolonged illness, Narendra Modi mourns

Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi veteran Yamini Krishnamurti died in New Delhi on Saturday which marked the end of an era in the classical dancing paradigm of the country.

According to reports, the dancing veteran was suffering from age-related issues.

She was 83.

A trailblazing Indian dancer, she is known for leaving generations inspired by her art.

“She’s the reason why I am dancing,” reveals Geeta Chandran, a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, in a conversation with indianexpress.com.

Apart from enthralling the audience with her majestic performance onstage, she taught numerous audience the art form.

She guided her students in her institute named Yamini School of Dance at Hauz Khas in New Delhi.

Her dancing career brought her many awards, including the Padma Shree (1968) Padma Bhushan (2001) and Padma Vibhushan (2016). They are marked as the highest civilian honours given by the Indian government.

Prime Minister mourns:

Indian PM Narendra Modi mourned the death of the Indian dancer and said: "Pained by the passing away of Dr. Yamini Krishnamurthy. Her excellence and dedication to Indian classical dance have inspired generations and left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. She has worked greatly to enrich our heritage. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti."
