India sends COVID-19 vaccines to Bahrain, Sri Lanka

New Delhi: India on Thursday sent 6 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Sri Lanka and Bahrain under the "Vaccine Maitri" initiative, adding a new chapter to the country's vaccine diplomacy.

Thanking PM Narendra Modi and his government for the vaccines, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa tweeted: "Received 500,000 #COVIDー19 vaccines provided by #peopleofindia at #BIA today(28). Thank you! PM Shri @narendramodi& #peopleofindia for the generosity shown towards #PeopleofSriLanka at this time in need."

Apart from Sri Lanka, Bahrain also received 1 lakh COVID-19 vaccines developed by the Serum Institute of India as a gift from India.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted: "Bahrain receives Made-in-India vaccines. A testimony to our long-standing fraternal ties."
