India now known to world as rape capital, PM Modi believes in violence: Rahul Gandhi

Wayanad/IBNS: In the midst of the country's outrage over a series of rape incidents, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said India is known as the rape capital to the world besides attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his belief in violence.

Rahul, who was speaking in his Lok Sabha constituency Wayanad, said, "India is now known to the world as the rape capital."

"Today international papers look at us and they say India does not know how to treat its own women and the reason is that there is a complete failure of leadership in the country," the Congress MP said days after a Hyderabad veterinary doctor was raped, murdered and burnt in Telangana shaking the nation.

"There is a reason for the breakdown of our institutional structures, a reason that people are taking law into their own hands. It is because the man who is running this country believes in violence and indiscriminate power," he added in a veiled attack on Modi.

Incidentally, the four men who were accused in the Hyderabad rape case were killed in an encounter by Cyberabad police in Telangana in the wee hours of Friday drawing mixed reactions from politicians, activists and common people.

The former Congress president also targetted the Prime Minister for his silence on the Unnao rape case in which a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Sengar is an accused.

The strong words from Rahul came on a day another rape victim from Uttar Pradesh's Unnao died after she was burnt by five men including her rapists barely couple of days ago.
