India has to become stronger: Modi

New Delhi, May 1 (IBNS): Visiting his constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India has to become stronger and his government is attempting to empower poor so that they can battle poverty.

"Schemes that strengthen the people are important not schemes that strengthen vote banks. India has to become stronger," Modi tweeted.

He said: "We are empowering the poor so that the poor can battle poverty. Take the Jan Dhan Yojana for instance."

Modi said: "Our experience during Jan Dhan Yojana brought out the richness of the poor. And it is really satisfying to work day & night for the poor."

He said the government is for the poor people of the country.

"This nation, our government and our banks...they are for the poor," he said.

Modi also rode an e-boat in his Lok Sabha constituency.

Modi had won from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2014.

The Prime Minister earlier in the day launched free cooking gas scheme in Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.

The scheme will provide free LPG connections to five crore women belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families between 2016 and 2019.
