The Indian Railways has touched yet another landmark moment by developing the world's most powerful hydrogen fuel-run train engine.

Speaking at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held at Bhubaneswar on Thursday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was quoted as saying by ET Now News that the indigenously-developed hydrogen fuel-run train engine has the maximum horsepower output than the engine developed by any other country in the world.

The Minister said: "There are only four countries in the world that have been able to develop a hydrogen train and most of the countries have developed trains with capacity of about 500 to 600 horsepower (HP)."

"In India, we decided to take a challenge and developed successfully using our engineers and talent a hydrogen train that is 1200 horsepower (HP)," he said.

In 2023, the Minister told the Indian Parliament that the use of Hydrogen as fuel provides larger benefits in the direction of green transportation technology to support zero carbon emission goals as a clean energy source.

If media reports are to be believed, the field trials of the first prototype is expected to take place on Jind –Sonipat section of the Northern Railways.
