Srinagar, Feb 10 (IBNS): The Indian Air Force (IAF) has airlifted a whopping 538 people, including 319 GATE aspirants, who were stuck in the twin capitals cities of Jammu and Srinagar due to the closure of the national highway connecting both, media reports said.

The IAF launched the special sorties of C17 Globemaster to give relief to the stranded Gate aspirants, locals as well as tourists.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, had to be closed due to the recent heavy snowfall.

While 179 students were airlifted from Srinagar to Jammu, 180 civilians were airlifted to Srinagar on Friday, said reports.

The students and civilians were reportedly thankful to the IAF for the humanitarian assistance.
