I erase hatred and fear: Rahul Gandhi on 'Muslim Party' remark

New Delhi, July 17 (IBNS): Amid the controversy over his reported 'Muslim Party' remark, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he erases hatred and fear.

In a tweet, Rahul said: "I stand with the last person in the line. The exploited, marginalised and the persecuted. Their religion, caste or beliefs matter little to me. I seek out those in pain and embrace them. I erase hatred and fear. I love all living beings. I am the Congress."

According to reports, Urdu newspaper 'Inqalab' had quoted Rahul as saying that the Congress was a “Muslim party”.

Gandhi was reported to have made the Muslim remark during a recent meeting with Muslim intellectuals on July 11.

Following the development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had attacked the Congress president for his reported remark.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said Congress President Rahul Gandhi should clarify what did he mean from his reported 'Congress is a Muslim party' remark.

"Rahul Gandhi has to come out to say very clearly that what did he mean when he said Congress is Muslim party. Does he stand by his leader [Karnataka Congress leader B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan] for calling Sharia court all over the country?," Sitharaman said while addressing a press conference in the national capital.

She said the Congress will be responsible if any disharmony occurs in the country between now and 2019 elections.

She said: "Congress playing a dangerous game. It is playing up the card of religion and communal division. It is that it may lead to the kind of division and kind of communal disharmony which prevailed during 1947 partition."

"Congress party shall be solely responsible if any disharmony plays out between now and 2019 elections," the Minister said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had reacted to say, "For the past two days I am hearing that a naamdar leader (Rahul Gandhi) has said that Congress is a party of Muslims. The comment did not surprise me."

"Even ex-PM Manmohan Singh had said that Muslims have the first right over nation's natural resources," he said.

"However, I will like to ask the party that whether the party is only for the Muslim men?" questioned Modi.

Taking a swipe, Modi said: "They don't stand with Muslim women on important issues like triple talaq."
